Woman Cutting Fabric

BY A THREAD

One can say a lot with the clothes they wear. Whether the intent is to stand out or blend in, the clothing you wear is expressive of who you are and how you feel. Fashion has always been a big source of inspiration and confidence. On the toughest days where I feel like I’m hanging on by a thread I get dressed according to how I want to feel to create my own placebo effect - and, unsurprisingly, it works. Feeling confident on the outside, even if it is just through clothing at the moment subconsciously elevates how I feel internally. Creating my own textile patterns adds to this effect, allowing me to create clothing that is uniquely “me” from start to finish.

For this series of work I digitally designed multiple textile patterns and had six of them printed on various fabrics including cotton poplin, poly crepe de chine, and satin. These fabrics were then cut into sewing patterns and sewn to construct wearable garments. Each textile is inspired by and named after an important woman in my life who motivates, challenges, and inspires me. Their patterns align with their personal style as well as their personalities to create a physical expression of the wonderful characteristics they each evoke.

“By a Thread” is a dedicated show. My final semester was one full of loss, so my show is being dedicated to two very important souls, Barbara Moser and Oliver Milo Gordon. Barbara, my godmother, inspired me to pursue arts in the first place. She created beautiful things and added so much color to the world. Oliver, my dog, was my emotional support animal and closest companion. He made life feel easy and smiled through every hardship. Both of these souls left people better than they found them. They are both big pieces of who I am today, and who I will grow to be. I wanted to honor them further by including their smiling faces in this show. Barbara, being an artisan herself, made beautiful stained glass so it was only fitting that their portraits were captured in this same style.
